I liked the film it was a fascinating and kind of sad, but the film seemed to end pretty well, it stars Kristy swanson and Louise Fletcher my sister read the book and she of course thought the book was much better then the film, but she and I still enjoyed the film also, and when I first saw this film years ago, I thought my goodness how are the characters going to get out of this situation, I'm referring to the crazy events that occour in the movie.

Yes, I do think I saw this movie years ago. With the children who were in the attic. This was a sad movie, but it was put together really well. I do not know why but it seem like every book that I have read that was turned into a movie, the book was always better. [agrant10]

I did read the book "Flowers in the Attic" years and years ago. It was one of those books that at that time was hard for me to put down. I also read "petals in the Wind" a sequel. I didn't read the next book in line. The book was banned in some school libraries because of the se#ual content. As I read it I thought how could anyone be so cruel to their own children. I read the book first when I was a teenager. Then read it again a few months ago along with the sequels of the book,Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday and Garden of Shadows. It is very sad the way the children got treated no wonder they could not adjust well to normal life. I have also seen the film and think although it is a good film I felt that it did not do the book justice as everything seemed rushed. They tried to cram the five books into one film. It would have probably been better as three or four films. It was also very different form the books. [littleone3]

I have watched the film and was very disappointed. I read the book first. Actually I read the series of books. There is about 5 of them that continue that story and the book is very different from the movie. The author is VC Andrews. She has passed now and is being continued by a ghost writer.. don't read the new stuff. It's not as good. I would suggest the books strongly. I read my copy of Flowers in the Attic so many times it feel apart. I also read the rest of the series and other series by V.C. Andrews. Andrews died many years ago and not even all of the Flowers in the Attic series is written by her. There has been a ghost writer writing her novels for years. I did see the movie, it was pretty good, but they had to leave a lot out since the book is so graphic. I didn't like the way the messed up the ending either, I guess I was a might bit disappointed in the movie. I usually prefer the book to the movie in most cases. [Aurone]
I read the series years ago and again just this summer. It was excellent reading. I did not see the film. My friend did and she said it did not do the books justice really. She said that if she hadn't already read the books, she probably would not have been so critical. The books tend to be more detailed and intense, I think. If I'm going to see a film, I'd rather see it and then read the book to compare. I remember buying the Godfather to read right at the theater....they claimed you would understand the movie you just watched better after reading it. In that particular case, I think I wished I'd read the book first. [sid556]
I haven't seen the movie, but I read the book several years ago. It's very disturbing! That being said, it's also engrossing! I've never been so into reading a book that emotionally upsets me like that before. I don't know if seeing the movie would have had a different effect on me, but reading the encounters of these four children was heart-wrenching, even though the novel was sure a page-turner! I've read the entire series a couple times and I've seen the movie. I prefer the books, which seems to be normal for me. I almost always get into the books more than the condensed movie. I didn't like that they changed the ending of the movie, although I have heard that some find the ending more satisfying. I think that this is still V.C. Andrews greatest story, and I have read the majority of her books. I like that you can never really predict all the twists and turns. [HansonFan]

My sister saw it once and told me never to watch it. I think it affected her very badly mainly because she was around ten when she saw it. My parents weren't around or they wouldn't have let her see it. Anyway, it still creeps her out today, and I'm sure it is worse because of the childhood memory. [AmbiePam]

Well here's my opinion, if your a person who enjoys reading a lot, then get the book, but if your like me and your more of a visual person then see the film because the film isent bad it just lacks some details, but its still entertaining to watch, Iv seen it over a dozen times.happy [apples99]
hi apples99 OMG! i loved those books! i read them all, flowers in the attic, if there be thorns, petals in the wind (i believe there were others but i didnt get that far) i cant remember when they were released but i was reading them when my daughters were just kids, and they are aged 28 and 25 now! i was bordering on neglect! because i couldn't put them down LOL i distinctly remember cooking.. yes cooking! while i was reading. I saw the film too but was a little disappointed, but then all books are perceived in they way we want them according to our imagination, that's what makes the written word more powerful than any movie. I did read the series Flowers in the attic. I couldn't put the book down and was anxious to read the next one. I did not see the movie, I tend to like reading the books better than watching the movies. The book was so interesting and made you want to continue reading until you finished. I think I finished each book in about two days. [sudalunts]
Oh yes, I read this book back when I was like 13 and was spellbound by it. There are several others in the series...lets see... Flowers In The Attic Petals On The Wind If There Be Thorns Seeds Of Yesterday Garden Of Shadows I also loved his book My Sweet Audrina I fell in love with his writing and have several of his books. When the movie, Flowers In The Attic, came out (the only book out of the series that seems to have been made into a movie) I had to see it. It is a really great movie but there are alot of details left out from the book. I did see the movie a long time after I read the book. The book is actually the first of a trilogy. I agree with your sister that the book is far better than the movie. VC Andrews (author) wrote some pretty shocking stories that involved incest, etc. If you haven't read the book, I would highly suggest it, and the two that follow. It's an excellent series that stands the test of time. Seeds of Yesterday is the last book, and then the prequel is Garden of Shadows. Garden of Shadows tells Olivia's story and everything that transpires to create the situation that is Corinne's life (the mother of the children). I do know that VC Andrews died before she completed all the series/books she had started, and I noticed a sharp decline in the quality of the writing. She still has books out, newer books, and I think the family trust is working with other authors to 'finish' her projects posthumously. The last series I read that was still completely true to her style is the Heaven series, and My Sweet Audrina. [mommyboo]

I've read the book (multiple times) and seen the movie. The book is a lot more detailed and there are some major differences in the movie, probably due to the fact that things had to be cut or changed due to time constraint. With a really detailed long book, it's hard to make it true in a movie unless you do some sort of television mini-series where you actually get like 6 hours of 'movie' instead of a standard 2 hour theatrical release. The story itself is gruesome and horrible - not in the sense of violence but emotional carnage from the decisions the characters make. I read it the first time when I was in high school - I think I was in high school, and I have the whole series so I can reread them when I feel like it. This would actually be a great book (or series) to remake into movies now, maybe they could be truer to the book. I think the movie was made in 87, which seemed modern at the time but now it's been 12 years lol. [mommyboo]

Interesting that you should bring this up since I have been thinking about it for the last few days. I have read Flowers, Petals and Thorns, but not the other 2. I believe I have seen the movie, but honestly do not recall it well enough to say for sure. I did enjoy the books, though they are very sad. The reason that I have been thinking about it is because my cousin said that if she ever has a daughter...she would like to name her Audrina, and no, she has never read "My Sweet Audrina", though I have. I'm a big fan of Virginia Andrews, so after reading all the books, of course I did see the movie. I am not the greatest fan of it simply because I felt the ending totally stuffed with the story that the book was supposed to portray, and they left so many important parts of the book out of the movie. For those that have read the book, and haven't read any other books in the Dollanganger series, I urge you to pick them up and read them.
