Whats Your Fave Musical Film

Picture the scene - my 5 yr old cutie is in her bedroom watching a film - I lnow whether she is going to be laughing or crying as soon as I hear her sing! Her favourites are Annie and Wizard of Oz and depending what song you can hear being belted out you know exactly how long til she starts to cry - but then I am a great believer that fiction and film can help us to feel and figure out how emotions work! My favourite is Joseph and I know every word of it - have done for the last 24 years! Do you have a favourite musical film? What is your favourite song from it? Do you not enjoy musical films? Let me know how you feel! This discussion came to me earlier today when we couldn't hear anything all around our house because a certain young lady was belting out 'tomorrow' from Annie!

For me, I'm torn between Sound of Music and Grease. But when you ask what your favourite song in the musical is, I can't really come up with a favourite from The Sound of Music... perhaps Lonely Goatherd. But with Grease, well as much as I love them all, I thing Summer Nights (or is it Summer Lovin'?) is my favourite. Or maybe "Hopelessly Devoted". No wait, "Greased Lightening". Then you go ahead and mention Joseph. Great! I love that too. But not as much as the other too. I prefer song and dance numbers and I guess that means Grease is my favourite. [patgalca]
Both great films and you know what I don't think my youngest has seen this! More songs to learn for her I think! Hopelessly devoted is my favourite from that film! Thanks for sharing pat x [mummymo]

Growing up without a doubt it was The Sound of Music. I have every song memorized and my brothers and sister and I would do little numbers from it for my family. My mother was really strict about what we watched but if it was a musical we could see it. I loved it. My favorite movie of all time is an 80s musical spoof call The Pirate Movie. I love musicals, broadway, and animated children's film that incorporate song and dance. [ehlana88]
Thanks ehlana - will do lol x [mummymo]

Haha, Annie I love that movie! :) My favourite though is Sound of Music and Mary Poppins.."Chim Chimney Chim Chimney..." and "Raindrops and Roses.." I love all the songs in Sound of Music, can never forget and would love to watch those movies over and over. I recently saw Mary Poppins ;o) I guess I will never grow up! [greengal]
gg I can't think of any of these musicals that I don't like - it is great that we can all revert to our inner child when we getlost in these films isn't it! [mummymo]

I like Wizard of Oz, definitely The Whiz (Michael Jackson) & Grease. I know they tried to release a new musical - that High School Musical but it was kind of tacky. I would have to say that The Whiz would be my favourite but i couldn't tell you a song coz it's been so long since i saw it & it hasn't been released in my region on DVD yet! [Gemmygirl1]
Haven't seen the whiz - is it worh looking for, I take it it is since its your favourite lol [mummymo]

Yes I can picture the scene your daughter is having with these films, but I also believe that it is great to let out her emotions. My favourite musical was Sound of Music the first one that came out I was only around 10 at the time but I adore the first musical that I seen. Oh dear you must enjoy your little girl though she sounds beautiful to me. [kathy77]
Thank you Kathy - she is beautiful - but then I am biases cos I'm her mum! She can be hard work but is worth every second of it! [mummymo]

I am a huge fan of Cabaret. It takes place in pre-Nazi Germany, a story about a American singer/actress and a English writer (of course the stage play is a lot different than that movie). It's definately not a musical to show your children. The story is very dark and depressing and, yet, it's addicting to watch both in movie musical form and in stage form. I'm also a fan of Annie, Moulin Rouge, Jesus Christ Superstar and Chicago. [ladycatherine82]
Thank you for sharing there are so many wonderful musicals of stage and screen aren't there? Have seen cacaret on the screen but never live - might do this if I get the chance - without the kids! xxx [mummymo]

i love the sound of music.. there are a lot of nice songs in it that instatly became classics.. you are sixteen going on seventeen~~~ baby its time to think~~ better beware be canny and careful~~ baby you're on the brink~~~ fellows will fall in line~ eager young lads and roues and cads~ will offer you food and wine~~ totally unprepared are you to face a world of men~~~ timid and shy and scared are you~~~ of things beyond your ken~~~ you need someone older and wiser~~~ telling you what to do~~~~ i am seventeen going on eighteen~~ i'll take care of you~~~~~~~ my x bf once sang this for me.. [lexxie3]
Was he out of tune lexxie hence ex boyfriend ? lol Sorry got a warped sense of humour that is sweet singing song from your favourite musical! [mummymo]

I love Annie too! Thank God we have Disney Channel and they show it there. I'm not sure if Mulan is a musical film but if it is it will be my number one favorite film in my whole life. I really like the story and the songs the sang especially "Reflection" which Leah Salonga sang. I love High School Musical I think it is a modern musical film. [rzr247]
Why didn't you tell me Donny O is in it before! He's fantastic! Will watch it the first chance I get now! lol xxx [mummymo]

I love the Rocky Horror Show. my favourite songs are probably Science Fiction, Superheroes, Touch Me and the Don't Dream it section of the Floor Show. oh, and I'm going Home. I just love the whole thing. when I'm in a bad mood or upset I can stick it on, curl up with a feather boa and I'll be singing and dancing around the room within the opening credits. and there is nothing quite so fun as going to the live show, which is the main focus in the UK, as opposed to showings of the film, which is more what it's about in the US. just getting really really dressed up, hanging around before the show seeing everyone else dressed up, the heckling, the props, everyone up and dancing and singing. just fabulous. I absolutely love it. even if the storyline is bonkers. or maybe because the storyline is bonkers. it doesn't seem so mad until you try and explain it to people that have never seen it. [Galena]
Teaah I like the rhps - love the timewarp! my 13 yr old loves the music fom the film but neither of my kids have seen the film yet and won't for a couple of years ...at least! I've never been to the stage version - bet it is loads of fun ...... [mummymo]

My favorites are mostly the classics like Annie, Marry Poppins and The Sound of Music. I also love Oliver and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory =) [gegegelay]
Oliver - thats one we haven't seen for a while - think we may watch this this afternoon! [mummymo]

i accept your words, most of the kids likes to hearing music movies, even my cousin daughter also doing like this ..but do u feel its for acceptable one? [nafizkhan]
not only is is acceptable it is good for us all kids and adults alike! [mummymo]

My mum is musical mad! She has been to see so many her favourite is Phantom of the Opera, for me I have only seen two Joseph with Jason Donovan, I know it was back in the 80s when I went to see it and Evita which I saw this year. I have to say for me Joseph was the better of the two. However filmwise when Madonna played the leading role with Antonio Banderas and Jimmy Nail is one of my favourite films/musicals. I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen Evita both at the cinema and on dvd. [wolfie34]
Joseph is fantastic - really good: but I have only seen Evita once and I can't remember much about it apart from the song Don't cry for me Argentina which I thought was really haunting! [mummymo]

music and lyrics is agood movie in this regard i think.have you seen the movie by the way? regards. [anilannu02]
don't think so! is is good! [mummymo]

My favourite is Meet Me in St Louis with Judy Garland as well as Les Miserables and Joseph! Any that can just make me sing and is uplifting. :) xx [hookfan]
Yes it is wonderful isn't it - haven't actually watched Le Mis - thats awful isn't it! [mummymo]

Mary Poppins is fantastic and she's 5 foot 2 ust like me - practically perfect in every way, lol. I love all the old Cliff Richard films too, Summer Holiday is brilliant too. [rainbow]
Yeah and summer holiday was cliff Richards! Blue Hawia and Viva las Vegas was Elvis - I was 6 when he died but was he a dreamboat in those films or what! I'd wait until he has annoyed you and make him watch them as penance! xxx [mummymo]

nothing wrong with only being allowed to watch these kinds of films pam! I think some kids today are allowed to watch things they cannot possibly cope with! [mummymo]

oh I have many but it think best one is Sound of Music. the song that goes do ra me. I have noticed my grand daughter of 28 months is trying to sing along with alot of songs lately. We also keep radio on alot . [Lakota12]
Sound of music is popular Lakota! Think it is so sweet when the little ones start ot sing and dance! [mummymo]

I just love Rocky Horror Show...I know it's crude..I know it's silly I have seen it over and over through the years. I love the music. I just want to break out dancing with it. If you haven't seen it Mummy you must..not with the kids..it is an adult film.. I also like some of the old ones Used to love to go to the theater You have to tape Tomorrow for me..I always enjoy hearing a new up and comin singer Cheers R [raydene]

More than dirty dancing .... don't believe it! I have to see this film! [mummymo]

[rica_12]
My son loves this too rica - the storyline could teach all young people something! [mummymo]

I like Rocky Horror and Little Shop of Horrors is good too. We have Grease 2 but that's about it for now. There are very few I don't like. [Destiny007]
Quite surprised no one mentioned some of the older ones yet! I must admit I like rhps and the little shop of horrors is ok but I prefer the ones the kids can watch with me lol [mummymo]

i love the sound of music!! i love the songs "My Favorite Things" and "The Hills Are Alive With the Sound Of Music". [mommy2jason922]
Think this would turn out to be the most popular musical film! [mummymo]

I have 3 favorites... Sound of Music (my favorite things is the best song) Grease (your the one that I want) and Rent (seasons of love) [blackkatdreamer]
I really have to get round to seeing rent - I have heard it is good! [mummymo]

Its a very popular choice toffeenut - you are not alone! [mummymo]

my fave music film is DDLJ( Dilwale dulhainiya Le Jayenge) also Hips dont Lie - shakira [bharatojha]

I like soft music. Good music can make a movie hit. Now a days in bollywood there is no good movies, lot of vulgarity is there which ruin our shyness. [sunnainder]
Thanks sunnainder! [mummymo]

I like Grease, Evita, and My Fair Lady. Those are all my favorite musicals. I also liked Chicago a lot. [nangel78]
There are so many to choose from aren't there! [mummymo]

OH wow LOL I have a few favourite musical movies...Annie is one of them, Grease of course, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Xanadu and numerous Gene Kelly/Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers etc etc flicks from back in the day :D [Ravenladyj]
I had forgotten those old ones - Like singing in the rain! x [mummymo]

"Meet Me in St. Louis" with Judy Garland. My husband and I cannot get enough of it. Sometimes we break out with that stupid song! We greatly admire Judy and Margaret O'Brien's characters. [Bee1955]
A true classic - love this film! [mummymo]

My favorite films are musicals. The Sound of Music, Moulin Rouge, All that Jazz... I love musicals, just because I love music. I like the Wizard of Oz and Annie, but they are not really my favorites. [berlinlife]
Is All That Jazz a real movie? I always thought it was a song from some musical. [AmbiePam]

Singing In The Rain - love it, love it, love it! Favourite song is "Good Morning". Just a perfect musical, great singing, great dancing, great story. Fiddler On The Roof is a close second mainly for the plot and also for Topol's performance of the title song. Brilliant! [Stiletto]
2 good choices stiletto! [mummymo]

I love Phantom of the Opera and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I also love Carousel, Oklahoma, the Sound of Music, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ SuperStar, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the original, of course), and the Wizard of Oz. It's so hard for me to pick a favourite song; I love it all! I sing along with Phantom of the Opera (that one's one of my top 2), and I eventually have objects thrown at me by my family members who are watching it with me as they scream at me to shut up. :) Oh well...I also sing along with every song from Joseph, my favourite is "Close Every Door". Those are my top 2. I haven't seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Jesus Christ SuperStar, Carousel, and Oklahoma in what seems like forever. I love the oompah-loompahs in Charlie (specifically all of their songs), and I love the song that the midgets in Wizard of Oz (Follow the Yellow Brick Road). I believe that music of any kind is an expression of what's within. Go think about that in relationship to the songs I like to sing...:) [springborn]
ok springborn - beginning to think that you may be almost as mad as I am - when looking at your fave songs! Just for the record close every door for me is one of my favourites! Thanks for your detailed response! [mummymo]

My two favourite musicals of all time are The Wizard of OZ and Oliver. They are absolutely fantastic. I also enjoyed The King and I as well. they were classic films with great actors and actresses and fantastic stories. there is something in them for everyone children and adults. too bad these days they dont seem to make films like that any more. i usually do not enjoy musicals but those threee are exceptions [cute125]
I love all 3 of them - but then I love most of them! [mummymo]

i had many of those when i was small i just loved the wizard of oz ,annie and oliver twist also when i grew older i fall in love with the movie 'yentel' of barbara streisend, victor hugo 'les mireble' and many more i can say i am a musical lover:) [liranlgo]

I'm old, but...Grease ruled! [Anakata2007]
You're not old honey your no's are just bigger! lol xxx [mummymo]

My favorite musical film is Madia Goes to Jail, and The Oz. [Lavera1]
Never heard of Madia goes to jail, was going to ask if it is good but as it is one of your favourites that would be a stupid question! lol [mummymo]

who could ever forget maria and capt von trapp and his seven children? who could ever forget julie andrews and christopher plummer? who could ever forget the songs do re mi, edelweiss, climb every mountain, my favorite things, and many more. the sound of music is one of the best musical film ever produced comparable to the biblical film the ten commandments. the more you see the film the more it becomes one of your favorites. that's why i am keeping a copy of the film in dvd format, one of the things we have to treasure. [ryanphil01]
The sound of music huh! :-) [mummymo]

I like many musicals, "West Side Story", Wizard of Oz", Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". But my favorite all time is "Singin' in the Rain". I am always imitating the blonde silent screen star when she says,"And I can't stand him". That scene cracks me up. I sometimes embarress my partner when we are walking in the rain, I can't help myself and start twirling the umbrella and sing just like Gene Kelly, only not as good!!! [fpd1955]
I'd join in hon - it's better rhan being miserable - and you might make someone's day - not your partners but you never know who else is watching and having fun xxx [mummymo]

I love Damn Yankees. :) Our school is doing it for our musical. [littlemissmistress]
Haven't heard of this one - sorry. Will try and find it! Good luck with your production! x [mummymo]

my favorite musical has got to be annie its really good [kerrypooh]
this is my daughters favourite - I think she knows every word! [mummymo]

It's the "Sound of Music"!. I really love this movie and I wouldnt get tired of viewing it again and again... [leechamp]
A classic ..... [mummymo]

I love The Sound of Music as well; I really do. But I also Love "The Five Heartbeats" a lot; Just seeing those guys singing songs from the sixties just does is for me; I love the Motown sound, and listening to the songs of that time is just a good thing for me; Just like "Dreamgirls", I really like Eddie Murphy performing his songs and having a ball on stage. [Savvynlady]
don't think I've seen The Five Heartbeats but I do love the motown sound - doesn't everyone! [mummymo]

My favorites I have lots. Well I really LOVE Phantom of the Opera. I have seen the play live and I love the movie version! Its my top top. Also love Moulin Rouge, Chicago, High School Musical, um. I cant seem to think of others but there are somewhat more :)) I do love musicals, always end up buying the soundtrack and singing along with the movie & cd eventually :)) Its something I do! heehee! Yeah they are GREAT! [monkeywriter]
Another fan - do you dance along too? [mummymo]

i love watching musical films. my favorite is the sound of music. i've watched it more than once. another good musical is the westside story. hehe the song "america" and "i feel pretty" are very funny. and moulin rouge is good too. [alingtimang]
all fantastic films ! [mummymo]

I, personally am a big fan of Grease. My mom likes Grease too but really likes the Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music (of which I cannot stand). I think my problem is I happen across these films so much I just get so sick and tired of them. [highflyingxangel]
I like them all - can any amount ever be too much? [mummymo]

I loved musical films! And i especially love the Sound of Music.. Favorite songs there are "My favorite things" and "I am sixteen". The film was so cute, I've cannot count anymore how many times i have watched it.. [livvy092002]
and always enjoyed it! I know the feeling! [mummymo]

i don't like music movie i like action movie why you like that? thank you [mr_ilham]
We all like our own things! x [mummymo]

Just as the first response, mine are The Sound of Music and Grease. My favorite song from Sound of Music is Adelvise (don't know if I spelt it right) when the dad sings it on the guitar and later when he sings at the end of the movie and the whole auditorium start singing in front of the Nazi's. That is another reason it is one of my favorites, the meaning of it. When I was a little girl I just liked the songs and Lezel, but as I grew older I started to understand the meaning of the movie. On Grese my favorite song is, um well, all of them. I know every word to the whole movie. I love it. [jchampany]
Both great choices and you are right about sound of music it is such a good film on so many levels! [mummymo]

I love all musicals , I loved Oklahoma , and 7 brides for 7 brothers , Mary Poppins(or poppout the boys called it lol when they were wee)Oliver , I just loved them all and can sing most of the songs too , Hubby just got a DVD from Ross for his birthday with 3 of them in the box, can't remember which ones though (just remembered we haven't watched them) xx [weemam]
I am never off the comp lol I will watch them with the laptop on me kneexx [weemam]

I don't have one. I thought you were going back to bed. Hehehe caught you [mfpsassy]
it must be embarrassing if you don't want to share! Just got here - sorry it took so long! xx [mummymo]

Well guess what Mo that is my favourite Film to and also the Song Tomorrow and yes I cry at this Film. Looks like your little Sweety and I like the same Film and song lol and my second favourite is Chitty Chitty bang bang and I like the Song Chitty bang bang and then Mary Poppins song Lets go fly a Kite. [gabs8513]
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, that's a good one. [AmbiePam]

Mouline Rouge and the sound of music of course :) [peaches20]
of course! two good films - I think that Sound of Music is No 1 [mummymo]

My favorite musical was Annie for the longest time only to be rivaled by the origianl Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, of course I had to be difficult. My fav song from Annie was Maybe. I kind of fell into line with Willy Wonka, Pure Imagination was my favorite. Now that I am older however, I really like RENT which is not intended for immature audiences. [infowiz36]
The first 2 are amazing - will have to look for rent! [mummymo]

Oh wow! There are just so many to choose from. When I was a young kid it was The Wizard Of Oz, then Annie, Oliver, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers but one that I really loved back then and still do is Calamity Jane, I can't pick a favourite song from any of them as I like them all. Oh another one I have that I really like is Hans Christian Anderson, Danny Kaye always did give me butterflies even when I was younger lol. [ScotsFerret]
Calamity Jane came on tv the day after that post! Thoroughly enjoyed it! x [mummymo]

Annie made me cry! It is a good one, especially for the young 'uns. : ) My parents didn't let me go to the movies until I was 10, so I was reared on old movies, mostly musicals. So, I'll have to name my top five, OK? Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Easter Parade, The Pirate (Gene Kelly), Meet Me in St. Louis (Judy Garland), and White Christmas. I didn't mention My Fair Lady because everyone else has. I've never seen Chicago or Grease. Are either worth seeing? [AmbiePam]
No you are not alone Pam! Hope you have fun with Grease - it may be an old film now but my kids love dancing and singing to it too! [mummymo]

Tomorrow in the movie Annie was good but if i had to pick out a musical from all the movies i've seen then one movie that wins hands down is SOUND OF MUSIC. [Kainaz]
Going by this posting that is the general consensus of everyone Kainaz! [mummymo]

I like any musical film, I am fond and bornlover of music, I see many English films I honour them, I like classic musicals, I likes any musical but I dont like if it is noisy music .. [deepak31]
yes deepak - I'm with you - music can be food for the soul and so expressive! I have to admit though I do like some of the noisy music too! lol x [mummymo]

i love sound of music, grease, annie cant think of any at the moment but i love having a sing along to them lol [mel_87]
can just imagine you and your lovely mum having a good singalong together - isn't calamity jane more your mum's style? lol I love these films too mel! xxx [mummymo]

MARRY POPPINS is my all time favorite! Julie Andrews is a living legend that will be remembered in the musical movie industry for her golden voice and lively aura. SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!!!!! - "Atoning for educatability through delicate beauty" [angelina74]
That is so true Angelina - and well done on the spelling - I checked it but I shouldn't have bothered - I'm not sure how to spell it lol xxx [mummymo]

Oh musicals! I love musical movies! Definitely the classics are on top of the list, Sound of Music, Annie, Mary Poppins even! The latest faves of mine are Rent (the story and acting! that was something) and Phantom of the Opera (Gerard Butler did a handsome job of being the phantom!). I think musicals are so fun to watch because you kinda get to sing along and sometimes, music helps with your emotions. [jynxypanda]
couldn't agree more my friend! x [mummymo]
